Apple tablet coming soon?
Monday, November 27th, 2006It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the concept of an Apple tablet. It would be a great machine for commuting, allowing me to keep up with news and email on-the-go. New reports indicate that Apple may be close to releasing such a beast in 2007.
Citing sources in Taiwan Australia’s Smarthouse claims that Apple researchers have built a fully working prototype of tablet Mac and three companies in Taiwan are bidding for a potential launch in mid 2007.
Quanta and Hon Hai Precision Industry (a.k.a. Foxconn Electronics Inc.) are Taiwanese companies that make notebooks and other devices for Apple. Both have signed confidentiality agreements with Apple for the Tablet Mac according to the report.
Smarthouse believes that Apple’s recent patent filing for a ‘mechanical overlay’ is related to the Mac tablet.

Palm launches Treo 680 Smartphone

Palm is continuing to support both Windows Mobile and Palm OS with the launch of its Treo 680 smartphone.
Following the release of the Windows-powered Treo 750v earlier this year, the 680 sees the company supporting the OS it originally developed.
The device supports email, web browsing and messaging in addition to mobile phone functionality.

All tools and checkmarks identify their purpose when you mouse over them.
DAF works on all pertinent 32-bit versions of Windows: 98, 98SE, Me, 2000, XP, and Server 2003. Dial-a-fix dynamically disables functions that are not applicable to your version of Windows. The version of Windows with the most support and functionality is currently Windows XP.

Sony and Ericsson get loved up over mobile TV

Sony and Ericsson are to expand their partnership beyond cell phones to provide mobile television and broadband services.
Ericsson, the Swedish telecoms equipment maker, announced the expansion of the Sony Ericsson partnership on Thursday. Per Nordlof, Ericsson’s director of product strategy and portfolio management, told Reuters: “There is a strong confidence between Ericsson and Sony after the success of the handset business and we will work to develop software that connects the gadgets in the home with the outer world.”
Sony Ericsson was a joint venture formed by the two companies in 2001 and has since become the world’s fourth-largest mobile handset maker. Last month the company announced earnings of ?¢‚Äö¬¨433m for its fiscal third quarter, up 187 per cent on the same period last year.

eBay pirates cough up $100,000 in ill-gotten gains
Monday, November 27th, 2006Two eBay traders have admitted to selling unauthorised copies of Symantec’s Norton antivirus software, and have handed over a total of $100,000 to Symantec.
Kevin Liu and GT Tian admitted in a California court to infringing copyright and trademarks of Norton pcAnywhere, Norton SystemWorks 2005 Premier, and Norton Ghost. Resident in New Jersey, Liu and Tian used various eBay user identities to sell the software between October and December 2005.
The lawsuit was brought against the pair by the Software & Information Industry Association (Siia), a digital industry trade association that pursues alleged intellectual property infringements.

256GB paper storage claims simply don't add up
Monday, November 27th, 2006A story has been making the rounds on the Internet, involving an Indian student who has allegedly found a method of storing compressed digital information on a regular sheet of paper. Sainul Abideen claims that his technique, dubbed Rainbow Technology, can store between 90 and 450 GB on a single sheet of paper.
The system allegedly works by encoding data into small geometrical shapes (circles, squares, and triangles) in various colors, then printing them out on a piece of paper. A scanner is used to read the data back in to the computer. Abideen claims that his storage method is more environmentally friendly due to the biodegradable nature of paper, and envisions magazine publishers printing tear-out sheets of paper containing demos and programs, replacing the traditional plastic-wrapped CD or DVD.

“Once there, she listens to music, chats in real time, explores like interests with strangers, joins clubs, divulges every last detail about her life, reads others’ details and plasters photos and words that represent who she is.
“But would she let her mother see it? It’s a question best posed to the millions of people who don’t hold back on their profiles when it comes to popular social networking sites.
“Now, rather than staying away from the unknown, people are apt to push the envelope, posting as much as they can on their profiles so they can attract as many ‘friends’ as possible.
“But,” Pickavet wrote, “not everyone who reads the site has the best intentions.”
And she is right. There are predators out there and many of them want your children.
