A nonprofit group says it plans to build a network called Neuronet purely to support virtual-reality game and business applications.
Neuronet, which is planned to be separate from the Internet, “will evolve into the world’s first public network capable of meeting the data transmission requirements of emerging cinematic and immersive virtual-reality technologies,” according to a Thursday announcement from the Vancouver-based International Association of Virtual Reality Technologies.
The first-generation Neuronet is scheduled to go live in 2007, the group said. Consumer applications are expected as early as 2009.
“The first-generation network is strictly an R&D network and will function as a sort of sandbox for virtual reality and gaming innovators around the world to develop new applications for a second generation network,” IAVRT co-founder Chistopher Scully said in an e-mail. No services yet are signed up to use the network, he added.
Virtual reality generally refers to environments with visual and audio information that makes a person feel immersed in a computer-generated realm. The growth of environments such as Second Life has spotlighted such efforts, and IBM believes that virtual worlds will open new doors to e-commerce as well.

With Macworld Expo just over a week away, many expect Apple CEO Steve Jobs to announce further details (and the availability) of the company’s yet to be released set-top-box, codenamed iTV. Powered by something similar to Apple’s Front Row media center software, the iTV is designed to get the media content that’s housed on a Mac (music, movies, and photos), streamed to the living room television. However, with its built-in wireless networking (suspected to be the faster 802.11n), why not bypass the Mac and have the iTV connect directly to the internet? Like the next generation consoles (Microsoft’s XBox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii) the Apple’s iTV is looking like the latest attempt at solving the ‘last 100 feet’ problem of how to deliver content from the internet into the living room.

One of the lead developers behind the Firefox browser has accused Google of abusing its powerful position in the search market to promote its growing range of products.
In a blog posting this week, Blake Ross argued that Google was wrong to include plugs for its Calendar, Blogger and Picaso at the top of search results for terms like ‘calendar’, ‘blogging’ or ‘photo sharing’.
“This is clearly bad for competitors, and it’s also a bad sign for Google,” wrote Ross, 21, who has been one of the driving forces behind Firefox.

The purpose of Win TempCleaner is to clear the contents of the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USERNAME\Local Settings\Temp
Doing so manually can be time consuming, especially if you have a lot of files and folders in there.
This cleaner is great for use with Install Shield Errors 1316, 1603 & 1706
The applet loops through all the files and folders contained in that path and determines if they can be deleted. If they can, they are and if they cannot, they are left behind.

Buzz about a Windows Vista zero-day vulnerability is troubling enough (although probably overblown). Now, there appears to be a second product activation hack, this one designed to fool the activation timer into not counting down.
The activation hack is quite different from the first one, which involved setting up a Key Management Service server. Microsoft also released an update blocking a hybrid of testing and final Vista “Monster” code that could bypass product activation.

Ever long for the good old days when all viruses did was stomp on the FAT table of your hard drive? Recently, McAfee’s Avert Labs encountered a new type of password stealer that uses Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony provider Skype’s network to propagate. There is no vulnerability in the Skype service itself, the Trojan just uses the Skype network to move about, according to David Marcus, security research and communications manager at McAfee’s Avert Labs.
The Trojan, called PWS-JO by McAfee, Downloader by Symantec and Win32/Scypex.A by Microsoft, is considered low risk, as there are very few instances of it being found and all of the major antivirus programs will detect it. What it reflects, Marcus said, is that virus distribution has moved beyond just e-mail and Web links to a new network, in this case, VoIP.
Password stealing Trojan viruses grew by 240 percent this year, making them the largest genre of malware along with Botnets, according to an Avert Labs blog posting.
Marcus said Avert gets between 8,000 and 9,000 submissions per day, and around 100 to 150 are totally new viruses, most often Botnets and password stealing Trojans. The methods for infection remain largely the same.

What took it so long?
According to recent headlines, Sony is somehow going to challenge Apple iTunes with a film download service straight for the PSP. Instead those headlines should have asked why it has taken so long.
Sony is uniquely placed to offer a film download service in that it has a music download service in its Connect system, it has a perfect handheld video device in the PSP, and a High Definition device in the PS3, it makes PCs and it happens to have access to 8000 major motion pictures, and it has been promising to execute on online films for around 18 months.
It was a widespread fact in the Summer of 2005 that Sony had issued a new firmware upgrade that layered the H.264 codec onto the device, and it began experimenting with free video downloads as early as August last year in its native Japan, where it was being managed by its own ISP, So-net under the brand of Portable TV.

AOL and Yahoo are destined to merge, or so said Merrill Lynch analyst Jessica Reif Cohen in a note entitled “Is 2007 the year AOL and Yahoo are in play?” that was sent to investors shortly before the Christmas holiday. Both companies have itches in need of much scratching. Yahoo’s problems have been quite visible as of late, as noted in the now infamous Peanut Butter Manifesto. To boil it down to an oversimplification that’s still technically true, Yahoo is feeling the heat from Google.
AOL, on the other hand, is feeling the heat from, well, the Internet. The marriage of Time Warner and AOL has always been tough to understand (unless you’re Steve Case), and Time Warner has flirted with the idea of selling AOL more than once (they’re reportedly thinking about it again, after deciding “no” last year). As of late, the company has been plagued by declining revenues from its search program, which makes sense given that the number of users heading to that portal appears to be dropping off. In the wild world of mergers and acquisitions, this means that AOL needs to toughen up or jump ship, and toughening up is often done with a few reps on the Acquisition Trainer 3000.

Samsung Electronics said Wednesday it has developed a new mobile memory chip that is thinner and uses less power than previous generations of chips, a development that could impact a wide range of portable consumer electronic devices.
Samsung claims it has developed the first 1-gigabit DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chip for mobile products, using 80-nanometer process technology. The new chip is at least 20 percent thinner than existing chipsets that use up to two 512-megabit chips, and it uses about 30 percent less power, the company said in a press release.
