Wikia, a for-profit corporation created by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, is preparing to launch a search engine that will leverage the user-driven model that has contributed to the massive success of the Wikipedia.
The Wikia corporation plans to launch the search engine with financial backing from online retailer Amazon (some sites are erroneously reporting that Amazon is involved in the development process, but please note that they are just providing financial resources for Wikia at this point) and a handful of other technology companies, but Wales hopes to generate profit from the service with advertising. In an interview with Times Online, Wales says that “the revenue model for search is advertising,” a truism demonstrated by competitors Google and Yahoo. Does Wikia have what it takes to beat the best at their own game? Wales is hoping that the reputation of Wikipedia and the transparency of the user-driven approach will be enough to attract users.

The argument between Sophos and Microsoft over the security of Windows Vista took another turn on Tuesday when Microsoft co-president Jim Allchin stepped in to try and calm things down.
The dispute was started at the end of November when security software vendor Sophos published its “top 10 threats” for the coming year, and included three potential threats to Vista ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù the internet worms labelled Stratio-Zip, Netsky-D and MyDoom-O.
According to Sophos, while companies running wholly Microsoft environments ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù Vista with other Microsoft software on top ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù would be secure, companies running third-party software would be vulnerable. Most organisations fall into that category, such as companies choosing to run IBM/Lotus Notes, instead of Microsoft Exchange.
Allchin argued in a blog posting on Tuesday that this is untrue, and that Vista can live happily alongside the right third-party security products. If individuals and organisations use their Vista or third-party security tools correctly, there is no reason for there to be any issues, he said.
Sophos’s claims were made on the day that Microsoft launched its business versions of Vista, and they put the software giant on the back foot.

Microsoft has filed for two patents covering technology used to organize and read syndicated Web feeds, such as those delivered via the widely used Really Simple Syndication, or RSS, family of formats.
The pair of applications were made public by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for what appears to be the first time on Thursday, following the expiration of a requisite 18-month window in which applications are generally kept secret.
Redmond actually filed for the patents on June 21, 2005. That date, incidentally, is just three days prior to the company’s formal announcement that it planned to build support for RSS into the next version of its Internet Explorer browser and into its planned Windows Vista operating system–then referred to as Longhorn.
Jane Kim, program manager for RSS in Internet Explorer, detailed those features in a blog entry last year. Kim and her colleague Amar Gandhi, who serves as group program manager of the Windows RSS team, are among the inventors listed on both applications.
RSS is typically used by news publishers, bloggers and podcasters to notify subscribers of new postings. Web users can choose from a number of freeware applications to collect and read those feeds.

Stardock BootSkin is a program that allows users to change their Windows 2000 and Windows XP boot screens.
Unlike other programs that can change the Windows XP boot screens, BootSkin does so in a safe manner. It doesn’t patch the Windows XP kernel. Nor does it require the user to download replacement Windows XP kernels to do so.
Boot screens that use BootSkin are typically under 20K compared to other boot screen programs whose files are over 2 MEGABYTES.
And best of all, BootSkin is free for non-commercial use.

Get ready for Origami take two. While Microsoft’s mini-tablet effort may not be quite where the software maker had hoped, the project is ready for another cameo.
This spring, Microsoft attracted huge buzz for the Origami prior to its launch, but as details emerged and the products hit the market, they were roundly criticised as overpriced and underpowered.
Next month, at CES, Microsoft will be back with another round of the tiny computers. The latest tablets, code-named Vistagami because of their Windows Vista support, also will come in a wider range of looks, including some models with keyboards. Microsoft chief Bill Gates is expected to mention some of the new devices in his CES keynote as part of a broader discussion of the new types of computers that will be enabled with Vista, including new all-in-one PCs and other esoteric designs.
But it’s unclear whether the new crop of devices will do that much to address the two biggest criticisms of the category: price and battery life.

Jeremy Allison, a high-profile open-source programmer, has resigned from Novell because of objections over its patent deal with Microsoft and is moving to Google.
In his resignation letter, Allison said Novell’s patent pact with Microsoft has crippled the Linux seller’s relations with the open-source community. At Google, he’ll continue his work on Samba, the open-source project he helped launch. Samba is software that lets Linux servers share files on Windows networks.
“Whilst the Microsoft patent agreement is in place there is nothing we can do to fix community relations…Until the patent provision is revoked, we are pariahs,” Allison said in the letter, quoting from an earlier message he sent to Novell management. Allison joined Novell in 2005 after working at Hewlett-Packard.
Groklaw, a site that monitors open-source legal affairs, published Allison’s resignation letter Thursday. Allison on Thursday confirmed the letter’s authenticity, saying he had sent it to an internal Novell mailing list, but declined to comment further on his departure from Novell.
Google is a major open-source software user and participates in several open-source programming projects. Andrew Morton, a key lieutenant to Linux leader Linus Torvalds, works there, for example.

Mobile phones with built-in digital cameras have become very popular today because of their portability and handiness. But the obvious downside is that the quality of camera phone photos is still very poor. The main drawbacks are:
- JPEG compression artifacts;
- vignetting (darkening of the corners around the image);
- poor color reproduction;
- poor contrast;
- poor sharpness noise.
Mobile Photo Enhancer is a handy and powerful tool capable of fixing all these problems with just a few clicks. It provides a quick and easy way to improve the quality of your images reducing artifacts and digital noise, correcting poor sharpness, contrast and color reproduction and fixing the “dark corners” problem. With its powerful filtering, the program converts images with pronounced defects into very usable photos.
Still another advantage of the product is that Mobile Photo Enhancer is a two-in-one software package: it contains tools for processing images one at a time as well as for simultaneous processing of whole collections of images.
