Tomodachi is a program that shows graphically the the way that you, your friends and other people in Orkut’s
network are connected. To be able to use it, you must necessarily be an Orkut member.
Don’t you know what is Orkut? Orkut is a social network website. This means that an Orkut member can search, among all Orkut members, for her friends (or relatives or classmates or acquaintances or whatever) and add them to her list of friends. If someone is not in the Orkut network, an Orkut member (and only an Orkut member) can send her an invitation to join it. Someone can after navigate through these friends lists and know who are the friends of her friends or the friends of the friends of the friends of her friends and so on. Besides that, there are also communities that are a kind of Internet forums created by Orkut members.
But in all this “friend of your friends” thing, we missed a way to visualize through graphs things like “did our friends knew each other?” or “has someone recently joined Orkut and all my friends have added her to their friends list except me?”. We expect that Tomodachi will help filling this gap.

ARLINGTON, Va.–PC hardware components can provide a way for hackers to sneak malicious code onto a computer, a security researcher warned Wednesday.
Every component in a PC, such as graphics cards, DVD drives and batteries, has some memory space for the software that runs it, called firmware. Miscreants could use this space to hide malicious code that would load the next time the PC boots, John Heasman, research director at NGS Software, said in a presentation at this week’s Black Hat DC event here.
“This is an important area and people should be concerned about this,” Heasman said. “Software security is getting better, yet we run increasingly complicated hardware. Unless we address hardware security, we’re leaving an interesting avenue for attack.”

Its success was “wake-up call”…
Microsoft chief software architect Ray Ozzie doesn’t necessarily think Google has all the answers but he does credit the company with opening Microsoft’s eyes.
Speaking to analysts at a Goldman Sachs investor conference in Las Vegas, Ozzie said: “Google’s success very clearly caused an inflection point within our industry and within Microsoft in terms of understanding advertising as an economic engine. It was a wake-up call within Microsoft.”

You’re probably familiar with SpeedPass, even if you didn’t have one. SpeedPass was a simple concept; an RFID tag inside a keychain attachment that you waved in front of the Mobil gas pump. It recognized you by your keyring and were charged accordingly. No credit card needed, since your card was already registered to your SpeedPass key.
Well, ViVOTech is looking to bring that same kind of rapid payment method to your cell phone. After years of development, it has begun to strike deals with credit card companies and retail outlets to support cardless and contactless purchases, just by waving a cell phone.
RFID is expected to take off in a big way. There have already been 20 million credit cards issued with RFID chips, allowing for purchases without having to manually hand over a card, according to Mohammad Khan, president of ViVOtech. But he thinks there’s even more security to be had with a cell phone than a credit card.

Web mail and message forums are the newest vehicle for the quickly spreading Storm Trojan, security researchers say. The latest attack injects a link to a malware site whenever infected users write online.
According to Symantec, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail and AOL are among a number of vulnerable Web-based e-mail products. Message forums based on Virus Bulletin and phpBB software are also at risk, said a spokeswoman.
Users are first infected by clicking on an e-mailed link, which downloads a malware rootkit able to watch network traffic, according to Dmitri Alperovitch, Secure Computing’s principal researcher. The worm then inserts ‘Have you seen this link?’ in messages posted on a variety of Web mail and online forums.

Is Windows getting cheaper or more expensive?
The short answer is easy: neither. Roughly speaking, the Microsoft product sells for the same price it has had for years.
The full answer is more complicated. There are all sorts of factors that go into one’s sense of whether the leading operating system “feels” more pricey or less expensive–the cost of other PC components and what gets bundled into the operating system are just a couple of them.
Microsoft General Manger Brad Brooks argues that Windows is a bargain, noting that it keeps getting more features for the same price.
“If you break down the cost of the software over the life of the PC, it works out to be less than how much you’d spend on milk for your family over that same period of time,” Brooks said.

Just one per cent likely to pay $500 for Apple phone
New research has suggested that the iPhone may be bad news for Apple but good news for its network partner Cingular.
A survey by research firm Compete Inc found that only one per cent of US consumers would be happy to pay $500 for an iPhone, mirroring concerns from some analysts.
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said at the iPhone launch that the “low end” version of the mobile device would be sold at $500.

Modern computers have a lot of space on their disks. And people stopped watching the space thinking that disks of that size just cannot be too small. Most likely, some software developers stick to that opinion as well and some software occupies quite a lot of space on disks or do not save it. In addition, software capabilities increase together with the development of computers. A lot of people can now work with large amounts of data, for example, editing home video, processing high-resolution photos or complex graphics, recording music. All this is impossible unless you have free space on your disk, which invisibly becomes less and less. And unexpected lack of space on your disk, especially on the system one, may result in your work being lost or even in operating system failures.
The simple, but still useful tool Abaiko Disk Space Monitor will keep you informed about the amount of free space on your disks. The news that there is not enough space on the disk will not take you by surprise in the worst time any more and you will no longer have to worry about it.
Features:
?¢‚Äî?† Easy to use and configure
?¢‚Äî?† Running at Windows startup
?¢‚Äî?† Monitoring disks of any types
?¢‚Äî?† Access to the application via the tray icon
?¢‚Äî?† Warnings as balloon messages
The tool can monitor disks of any types your computer supports.
Abaiko Disk Space Monitor is intended for both regular home users and system administrators that need space for quickly growing logs of various systems, enlarging databases, data backups, or for software caching data.
