Confirming what it admitted was the “worst kept secret” in the video game business, Microsoft on Tuesday announced its Xbox 360 Elite, an upgraded version of its 16-month-old next-generation console family.
News of the Elite console has been making its way around the blogosphere and video game sites for days; Microsoft’s announcement did not contain any real surprises.
Essentially, the new console, at $479, is set to include a 120-gigabyte hard drive, as well as an HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) port, an HDMI cable and a wireless remote, all in black. The Elite package will not, however, include an upgrade to the Xbox 360’s behemoth power supply.

Yahoo! will begin offering unlimited storage for its free web-based email in May. The move makes it the first of the major free email providers to offer unlimited storage but, in all likelihood, it will not be the last.
Yahoo! currently offers 1GB for its free mail service and 2GB for its premium fee-based service. Google’s free Gmail service offers more than 2.5GB of storage, and Windows Live Hotmail offers 2GB for free.

Warezov strikes again
Miscreants have again adapted the Warezov Trojan horse to target Skype users, Websense Security Labs warned on Thursday.
The attack is similar to threats that target instant-messaging applications. A targeted Skype user will receive a chat message with the text “Check up this” and a link to a malicious executable called file_01.exe on a website, Websense said in an alert. If the user runs the file, several other files are downloaded and run, it said.

KO Approach is a desktop utility application designed to speed up file navigation in Windows Explorer. Unlike the traditional way of accessing files where a window needs to be opened to reveal a folder’s content, Approach offers a convenient and easy to navigate set of hierachical menus.
KO Approach is an extention to the Operating System; it runs on the background and does not need to be open at all times. In fact, unless you need to change some of its settings, you may never know Approach is there at all!
Just click on any folder in Windows Explorer, hold down the mouse key and a menu will appear, displaying the contents of the selected folder as a list of items. Highlight folder icons to expand sub-menus and move further down your directory structure, or select a file to open it in the same the way you do it from the Start menu. It’s that simple.
With KO Approach, even the most deeply buried file can be located in a matter of seconds! Also, KO Approach supports dragging and dropping.
You can also preview pictures instantly. The supplied plug-in can display thumbnails of most common graphics formats, right from KO Approach menus.
Play back WAV sound files right from Approach menus. All you need is the InstantWave plug-in included in the Download package.
You can also preview text-based files using a separately available InstantTxt plugin. It installs in seconds and enables you to view the contents of any txt file.

So, 10 gigabit Ethernet too slow for you? How about 160 gigabits?
That’s the latest breakthrough from IBM researchers, who have come up with an optical networking chip measuring 3mm by 5mm but has 16 times the throughput of today’s networking chips.
Now before you think this will mean more MP3s and dirty videos, think again. First, IBM doesn’t expect it to see the market until 2010, and when it does, it will be for massively parallel supercomputers like its own Blue Gene, the fastest supercomputer in the world.

If VoIP is the future, and Microsoft believes strongly in it, then one of the first things that needs to be done is improve the ability of Joe User to make calls that don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t suck. Users do insane things like place their microphones 4 inches away from their desktop speakers, which are blaring at high volume (of course). Surely the VoIP revolution isn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t all about line echo and feedback!
To this end, Microsoft is working on ?¢‚Ǩ?ìvirtual headphone?¢‚Ǩ¬ù technology that would allow your desktop speakers to function more like headphones, and in the process, make it more convenient to use voice services from a PC.
