miniTrezor 2.0.10

miniTrezor creates a protected, safe store (so-called vault or trezor) for the user’s data: the data are encrypted, password protected, and physically may be stored in several copies (located on several discs, or even several computers). The size of the trezor is determined by the space available on the discs, otherwise it is capable of accommodating any number of files of any size.

You may deposit common files as well as packages in the vault (the client program may combine several files or entire directory systems into one single unit, this is what is called a package), or you may as well safekeep passwords here along with the pertaining data (username, name of the system, date of expiry, etc.). The data deposited in the trezor (vault) may be systemised as well, in so far as a directory structure may be set up in the program.

miniTrezor is a one-user application, and may only be run from one single computer. The program may be downloaded and used for private purposes free of charge.

GAIM Goes to Pidgin

Years of legal wrangling between AOL and the open source instant messenger GAIM has resulted in a settlement forcing GAIM to change its name. Enter Pidgin.

GAIM has provided support for AOL’s AIM protocol in an open source client. But AOL never liked the fact that GAIM includes “AIM” in its name and has finally emerged successful in its effort to get the project renamed.

Open Source wunderkind Mark Spencer, who is perhaps better known as the leader of the Asterisk open source VoIP effort, originally called GAIM GTK+ AOL Instant Messenger. In response to criticism and legal challenges from AOL, Spencer changed the name to GAIM.

But over the years GAIM has grown from supporting just AIM to now being a multi-headed IM client supporting Live Messenger Service (a.k.a. MSN and .NET Messenger Service), Yahoo Messenger, Jabber and Google Talk (XMPP) and IRC among numerous other IM protocols. GAIM has also become a component of nearly every Linux distribution.

SanDisk, Yahoo Team Up on Wi-Fi MP3 Player

Sandisk and Yahoo have joined forces as the latest challenger to Apple’s market leading line of iPod music players. The new Sansa Connect sports a number of features not found in a standard iPod, including Wi-Fi connectivity and several Yahoo services like Launchcast Internet Radio, the Flicker photo sharing service and Yahoo Messenger.

The $249.99 Sansa comes with 4 GB of storage, a 2.2-inch color TFT screen and an internal speaker. When not connected to a Wi-Fi network, Sansa functions as a traditional Flash MP3 player that can be connected to a PC to synch music preferences. Users can play music or view photos stored either on the player or on an optional microSD card.

DRM-free music: EMI calls the tune and Apple takes the credit

Comment: Having been a big believer in DRM and its necessity, although dismissive of its inflexibility and lack of sophistication, we, Rethink Research, have to interpret the big news of last week that EMI will offer its catalog DRM-free, as at least dangerous and potentially disastrous. But that’s only if it is looked at in the long term. In the short term it might even be beneficial to both EMI and Apple.

This has been dressed up as an Apple iTunes ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú EMI joint announcement, but it is a pure EMI move. We interpreted the recent call by Apple and Steve Jobs, for an end to DRM, as a move to get European law-makers off Apple?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s back, and we still see it as that. We don’t think that Jobs can really want an end to DRM, but EMI might.

Autonomy launches video copyright scanner

Software promises to track down copyrighted Youtube and Myspace content

Autonomy has launched a new tool that helps publishers and broadcasters to track down materials that infringe on their copyrights.

The new Virage Automatic Copyright Infringement Detection (ACID) software scans and analyses both images and audio for copyright infringements. Autonomy markets the software at copyright owners and organizations hosting user generated content such as Youtube and Myspace.
