Apple TV to play YouTube clips

Added Memory Offered As Option For Customers

Apple will begin featuring YouTube videos on Apple TV within weeks, as the computer giant continues to explore ways to work more closely with Google, which bought the video-sharing site last year.

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs announced the device’s new feature Wednesday at a technology conference in Southern California. Apple is also including Google’s search and mapping applications on the highly anticipated iPhone, which is expected to be released at the end of June.

In March, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt, who sits on Apple’s board of directors, told investors that the two companies “are doing more and more things together.”

AMD brings 64-bit CPUs to ultra-small PCs

Following its preview of the performance-minded Phenom earlier in the month, AMD today revealed new chip technology that could bring 64-bit code to the very smallest computers, including those built for the developing world. The Sempron 2100+ (PDF) includes the same architecture as the Athlon 64, including an integrated memory controller and HyperTransport for shuttling data quickly to other parts of the system; a 1GHz clock speed and optimizations, however, drop the peak power of the chip down to 9W.

Gates, Jobs Make Rare Joint Appearance

CARLSBAD, Calif. — Legendary technology rivals Bill Gates and Steve Jobs made a rare joint appearance Wednesday and wasted no time making nice.

“Bill built the first software company in the industry,” said Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc. “Bill focused on software before anyone.”

Gates, the Microsoft Corp. co-founder, hailed Jobs for taking big risks and developing products with “incredible taste and elegance.”

“What Steve has done is quite phenomenal,” Gates said.

Apple ships DRM-free music

Unristrictued music arrives with a 25-30 per cent price hike

Apple has started shipping songs without digital rights management (DRM) technology.

The music can be found in the new iTunes Plus store and is limited to songs offered by the EMI record label.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs however predicted that more labels would follow.

Facial recognition slipped into Google image search

Google upped its stalker factor this week by adding face recognition abilities to its image search. While currently unofficial and unannounced, users can now search for images that only contain faces by appending a query string onto the end of a search URL. For example, a general image search for “Ars Technica” produces a variety of image results, but when appending “&imgtype=face” to the end of the URL, all new results contain photos of people.

Unseen iPhone 'better than your current mobile'

A triumph of style over substance?

Consumers have never seen one, touched one or even got the full details of what it is and how it works - but apparently almost everyone thinks it’s better than the one they’ve got now.

According to research from analyst house Strategy Analytics, 90 per cent of mobile users said they believe the forthcoming iPhone will be better than the mobile they currently have.

The research also found more than 40 per cent of individuals rate the iPhone much better across key functional categories - including music player, web browsing, voicemail and phone call management than their own phone.

DRM-free iTunes set this week?

Apple is prepared to launch its DRM-free catalog of music from EMI this week, according to French sources familiar with negotiations for multiple online music stores. The seeming delay for introducing the new tier of content has been primarily attributed to a desire to offer the entire catalog at once in the unprotected format rather than a gradual rollout. The companies’ technicians are simply in the later stages of encoding and hosting the files before they go live, the contact says.

European officials question Google's privacy policy

A European Commission advisory group has raised concerns about how Google uses and manages users’ search data.

A privacy advisory group composed of representatives from all of the European Union countries sent Google a letter expressing concern over the search giant’s new privacy policy announced in March.

The issue surrounds Google’s policy of anonymizing its server logs after 18 to 24 months. According to a Commission source, the advisory group is concerned with how the information is managed, rather than the length of time it is stored.
