i.Ftp 2.11

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

i.Ftp is a little graphical FTP/SFTP client, which does what I need in an FTP client without the size and fuss.

i.Ftp is designed to work from portable media like USB keys as well. It doesn’t store anything in the registry and will find it’s resource files and options via relative paths. A full install is about 900kb so it doesn’t eat up much space on your portable storage. If you don’t need SFTP support then you can delete libssh.dll and libeay32.dll to make it even smaller!

From Russia With Larceny

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Finjan, a developer of Web security products, has found what has to be the nastiest of malware yet because it inserts itself into a legitimate online banking transaction that’s supposed to be protected by SSL encryption.

The company is calling this new form of thievery “crimeware,” as if we needed another term to keep straight, but it’s nasty stuff. In just the month of July, Finjan identified 58 criminals using the MPack toolkit to infect over 500,000 unique users.

MPack may be the most dangerous malware development kit seen yet. It is a PHP-based kit produced by Russian hackers for building mostly keylogging software. It’s actually sold and supported by the Russians, complete with a service contract for new versions, and is upgraded every two to four weeks. It’s not the first time a service contract has been offered for software that supports the spread of malware.

Pownce Alpha 2

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Pownce is a way to send messages, files, links, and events to your friends. You’ll create a network of the people you know and then you can share stuff with all of them, just a few of them, or even just one other person really fast.

Right now, there are four basic things you can send: messages, links, files, and events.

You might send an event out to a dozen of your friends letting them know you’re hosting a party this Friday. They could easily get the event details you entered, respond with questions or comments and then quickly rsvp.

Say you had a great photo you wanted to share with all of your friends. Just add the file and all of your friends will get it right away. They’ll be able to reply and tell you if it’s cool. You could even post songs you recorded in your home studio to share with your friends.

The software is available right now for Windows and Mac users and will available for Linux soon too. It takes advantage of a new technology from Adobe called AIR, which is super useful.

Requires: Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR)

New Windows in 3 years

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Next version of the ubiquitous desktop OS will be a full-scale upgrade

Microsoft is aiming to release the next version of its desktop operating system, now dubbed Windows 7, in 2010. Few details are yet available regarding the forthcoming platform but reports suggest it may now be a major release instead of the interim update previously planned.

The next version of the Windows client was formerly called Vienna and was intended to be a minor upgrade for Windows Vista. At a recent global sales conference in Florida, Microsoft disclosed it is gearing up for a full-scale upgrade in three years’ time, barring any setbacks during development.

“We are scoping development of Windows 7 to an approximately three-year timeframe, with the specific release date ultimately determined by meeting our quality bar,” Microsoft said.

Quicksilver β51 for Mac OS X

Monday, July 30th, 2007

At first glance, Quicksilver is a launcher.

When opened, it will create a catalog of applications and some frequently used folders and documents. Activate it, and you can search for and open anything in its catalog instantly. The search is adaptive, so Quicksilver will recognize which items you are searching for based on previous experience. It also supports abbreviations, so you can type entire words, or just fragments of each. When not in use, Quicksilver vanishes, waiting for the next time you summon it.

Quicksilver’s greatest strength, however, is not search. Any item you are able to find, drag, or otherwise pull into its universe is endowed with many potential uses. Hitting takes you to the action field, where you can use the same adaptive search to select what you would like to do. Among other things, files can be emailed, copied, compressed. Text can be modified, transmitted between programs, or searched for on the web. Some actions even support an indirect object, so you can send an item to a person, move files to another folder, or open files with a specific application.

Quicksilver can be given the ability to understand the data inside of files, allowing you to work with data in new, faster ways. Plug-ins add both new items and new actions, allowing you to run scripts, send instant messages, dial phone numbers, look up words in a dictionary, queue up songs in iTunes party shuffle, and much, much more.

Frequently used commands can be bound to triggers, giving you the ability to execute them immediately by hitting a hot key or using the mouse on a corner or edge of the screen.

In the end, Quicksilver has one very important effect: the effort of frequent tasks fades into the background and you are able to act without thinking. After an adaptation period, Quicksilver becomes an extension of yourself; the process fades away leaving only the results.

Wikia acquires Grub distributed search indexing system

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Wikia, the company created by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, has acquired the Grub distributed indexing system from LookSmart and is preparing to distribute Grub’s code under an open source license. Wikia plans to use Grub for its user-driven search engine, which is still under development.

Originally created in 2000, Grub leverages the distributed computing model to crawl the web and index pages. Users install a specialized client application on their computer, which then automatically performs indexing while idle and transmits page data back to a centralized repository. In this manner, volunteers will contribute the raw computing power that performs the indexing.
