xplorer² is a file and information manager that adheres to the philosophy “efficiency through simplicity”. Without reinventing the wheel, it integrates the best features of Windows’ shell architecture in a small, resource efficient package that’s instantly familiar to work with. But look a little closer and you’ll discover a whole new world under the surface that offers power, precision and flexibility, and will boost your everyday productivity no end!

The lightweight version of xplorer2 is not a crippled unusable salesman of the professional version. It is a complete little file manager, albeit lacking a bit in bells and whistles.

The free version is for private (home) or academic (school & university) use only.

Microsoft extends Windows XP’s lifeline

Friday, September 28th, 2007

But Vista sales “still going strong”, it claims…

Bowing to pressure from customers and computer makers, Microsoft plans to keep Windows XP around a little longer.

Large PC manufacturers were slated to have to stop selling XP after 31 January. However, they have successfully lobbied Microsoft to allow them to continue selling PCs with all flavors of Windows XP preloaded until 30 June, a further five months. Microsoft also plans to keep XP on retail shelves longer and will allow computer makers in emerging markets to build machines with Windows XP Starter Edition until June 2010.

The move indicates the continued demand for the older operating system, some nine months after Windows Vista hit store shelves.

Friday, September 28th, 2007

CPU-Control handles the CPU-affinity for multicore-systems. Instead of running each process on both CPUs you can define it as you want it. For example, if you want to seperate the firewall and the anti-virus-software from the graphics-application.

CPU-Controls offers five different ways to control the CPU-affinity:

• Automatic: It chooses alternatingly one CPU for each new process
• Manual: You define a list, where you can set the way to handle each process
• All processes run on CPU 1, which is useful for old applications which crashes on a dual core system
• All processes run on CPU 2
• Deactivated

Apple update disables unlocked iPhones

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Don’t say you weren’t warned. After cautioning customers earlier this week that unlocked iPhones may be disabled when installing future Apple software updates, the company on Thursday made good on its warning.

Two iPhones in the Macworld offices that had the SIM hacks applied to them were disabled after installing iPhone Update 1.1.1. The update process went through without a hitch, however, when the phone restarted an activation message appeared that said, “Insert an unlocked and valid SIM to activate iPhone.”

A similar message appeared in iTunes. A note saying the SIM card was not valid and to insert a valid SIM card greeted the user.
