CheckDisk 1.03

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

CheckDisk is a powerful tool for searching and repairing disk errors. It is quite similar to the ScanDisk tool or chkdsk.exe, supplied with the Windows operating systems (Windows 2000 and higher, possibly with Vista and admin rights). You can select either standard or full tests. The full test additionally performs a sector check. It is capable of finding bad sectors on your disk and marking them as such. The program works both with hard disks (including SCSI and RAID) and removable media.

Stream Viewer 1.05

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

Did you know that: You could have an unlimited number of invisible files on your computer?…That such files could be secretly used by spyware companies or virus authors?…That they are currently used by Microsoft to store hidden data?… And that Microsoft has provided no standard means to view or remove these hidden files?

Windows NT (NT4/2000/XP/2003) has the ability to attach multiple hidden files, known as “alternate data streams”, to any given file (or folder). These are not the usual “hidden” files that you can choose to make visible. These are invisible files. In other words, this is an entire, secondary file system for which there is no equivalent to “Windows Explorer”. This is an entire, secondary file system which you are not intended to access.
Or to put it another way, Microsoft has deliberately created a file system that is incompatible with their own file browser (Windows Explorer), creating types of files that Windows itself cannot see!

Stream Viewer is a free “shell extension” that provides the ability to view these hidden files through the normal functionality of Windows Explorer.

Requirements: Windows NT/2000/XP/2003

Napster Relaunches as a Web-based Service

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Digital music service Napster is relaunching itself as a Web-based music service which enables customers to play their music on any computer without additional software.

The digital music service Napster is relaunching itself as a Web-based music service that enables its users to tap into their music from any Web-enabled computer without having to download and install client software. Dubbed “Napster 4.0,” the idea is to make Napster’s music service more flexible by being compatible with a wide range of Internet-enabled devices—with the hopes that, in turn, will attract more paying customers. Napster also hopes the move will appeal to consumer electronics manufacturers looking to offer direct integration with a music service, as well as third-party Web sites looking to offer music capabilities.

Google hears our pleas: Urchin Software resurrected

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

At the eMetrics Summit today in Washington, D.C., Google stunned this writer by announcing something I thought I’d never hear: the resurrection of Urchin’s log-based web analytics suite. The company is preparing a significant update to the standalone Urchin weblog analysis tool at the same time that it is also announcing improvements to Google Analytics, its “on demand” stats service.

As previously discussed, Google Analytics is based on Urchin’s “on demand” software, which Google acquired along with the company back in 2005. Urchin’s other killer product, a log-based analysis tool, was essentially ignored, leaving many customers feeling abandoned (and not a little ripped off). Those abandonment issues may soon fade…

Windows users getting unwanted auto-updates?

Monday, October 15th, 2007

Microsoft investigating…

Blogs have been buzzing with reports that Windows users who thought they had automatic updates set to either not install or get permission before installing nonetheless had their machines patched and rebooted.

But Microsoft posted a response on its website saying no changes were made to the automatic update mechanism nor did any recent updates change AU settings. The company is looking into whether customers might have actually had their settings changed by Microsoft Office or Windows OneCare, two programs that do have mechanisms that will change a computer’s automatic update preference settings.
