REDWOOD CITY, CALIF. — Portals are so twentieth century. Or are they?
Joanne Bradford, chief media officer for Microsoft’s MSN site, is brushing aside any criticism that online portals have seen their best days. Speaking at VentureWire’s Consumer Technology Innovations conference here today, she said the portal concept, and MSN in particular, are alive, well and getting plenty of Microsoft’s investment money.
Asked if portals were “dying a slow death,” Bradford said quite the opposite. “Everything is looking more like a portal these days if you look at Facebook, MySpace and YouTube. I think there’s a reverse portal phenomenon going on where you stuff the tail back in the head and make it mean something.”
In other words, while a lot of social networking sites carry more personalized, user-generated and long tail content (referring to the theory of niche sites creating their own markets), they’re all trying to organize content like a portal does.

Having gained a certain degree of expertise in developing and designing its own energy efficient data centers, Google thinks it’s in a position to help spur on the adoption of even more renewable energy sources.
The Mountain View company announced on Tuesday a new research and development group whose mandate will be to continue to develop electricity from renewable energy sources much cheaper (and cleaner) than coal. The new initiative, dubbed Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal, will primarily target energy sources like advanced solar thermal power, wind power technologies and enhanced geothermal, according to Google co-founder Larry Page, and the company plans to shell out tens of millions of dollars in 2008 on R&D and related investments.

oogle has provided the IP address of an anonymous blogger to an Israeli court voluntarily as part of a defamation case.
The defamation case centers on allegations against three members of the Shaarei Tikva council posted on Blogger, including posts that suggested the council members took bribes, pretended to be disabled to gain tax advantages, and that the councilmen have links to organized crime. The councilmen asked the court to order Google to hand over the IP address details of the anonymous blogger but the court did not order Google to do so. Instead Google entered into an arrangement where by they would contact the blogger and give him or her 3 days to respond anonymously to the allegations. There was no response from the blogger so Google handed over the IP address to the court and plantiffs despite there being no legal requirement for them to do so.

French mobile carrier Orange has made a mockery of the T-Mobile charge of €600 to unlock an iPhone, which was forced upon it by a Vodafone injunction. Orange has offered to unlock iPhones for much more reasonable prices which will give customers an incentive to choose their own carriers in France.
The price to unlock an iPhone purchased in France through Orange is a relatively affordable €150 if they stay with the carrier on an non-iPhone plan and €250 if they choose not to take a plan without the carrier. In addition, an Orange customer can unlock an iPhone for €100 within six months of purchasing an iPhone if they choose an iPhone plan. The resulting prices of €549 and €649, while still relatively expensive compared to the €399 with an Orange iPhone plan, are not totally outrageous for consumers wanting a premium smartphone product in Europe.

Windows XP trounced Windows Vista in all tests, regardless of the versions used or the amount of memory running on the computer, says Devil Mountain Software.
In the latest Mac versus PC ad, that put-upon Windows guy quietly concedes he’s “downgrading” from Vista to XP. He may have good reason: new tests show that the older XP runs common productivity tasks significantly faster than Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s newest operating system.
Researchers at Devil Mountain Software, a Florida-based developer of performance management tools, have posted data from their most recent Windows performance tests — and Vista, even after it’s been upgraded to the new Service Pack 1 beta package, is shown to be a laggard.
“The hoped for performance fixes [from Vista SP1] that Microsoft has been hinting at never materialized,” said Devil Mountain researchers, in a blog post summarizing their results.
