MySpace has just announced that they will be launching their developer platform on February 5th. You can pre-register now by going to http://developer.myspace.com (requires login).
Earlier this evening, I spoke with Amit Kapur, who the company is also announcing has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer and will oversee the platform. While MySpace may be a little late to the platform party, it’s clear that they have been closely watching developments in the space and will be addressing many of the growing pains that chief rival Facebook has dealt with from the get-go; most notably privacy, monetization, and data ownership.

File-sharing service RapidShare has been dealt a blow by a German court and faces severe penalties if it fails to take appropriate measures against the uploading of copyrighted content by its users. The Düsseldorf Regional Court ruled against RapidShare last week in a case brought on by the German version of the RIAA, GEMA. GEMA hailed the decision as a huge victory, and concluded that RapidShare could face shutdown if it’s unable to comply.
RapidShare has long argued that it can’t be held responsible for what its users upload to the site. But the court disagreed, saying that the site must take responsibility for copyright infringement, even when the material in question was uploaded by its members. “This decision marks a milestone in the fight against illegal usage of our repertoire,” said GEMA CEO Dr. Harald Heker in a statement. “It sends out a clear signal that any services, which derive financial benefit from unlawful uses of our works, will have to take extensive measures to protect the rights owners and cannot simply evade liability by referring to the action of individual users. With this landmark decision, the way has been paved for instituting proceedings against other similar services.”

After a fairly challenging year, struggling web media company Yahoo posted a 23 percent decline in fourth-quarter earnings and announced plans to cut 1,000 jobs, or roughly 7 percent of its total headcount.
Net income for the quarter was $206 million, or 15 cents per share, down from $269 million, or 19 cents per share, last year. Revenue climbed 8 percent from last year to $1.83 billion.
Despite its cost-cutting plans, CEO Jerry Yang maintains the company is investment mode.
“I strongly believe that increased investment is the only appropriate measure at this time,” Yang said.

Analysts describe the number of unlocked iPhones as “astounding”
Apple’s iPhone was arguably the hottest piece of consumer electronic for 2007. Those who purchased iPhones were expected to activate new contracts on exclusive wireless networks in the U.S. and parts of Europe. This proved difficult for those who desperately wanted iPhones, but were either unwilling or unable to commit with AT&T – such as those who live outside of the officially supported territories.
Such restrictions have led savvy cell phone enthusiasts to acquire iPhone hardware, but evade the attached contract. Those who wish to run iPhone have to unlock the mobile before it may run on any outside GSM network.
