Microsoft Awaits Vote Results On Open XML Standardization

Monday, March 31st, 2008

If the file format does not become a standard, some governments could shy away from using Open XML — and therefore, potentially, Microsoft Office.

After years of wrangling, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s Office Open XML file formats are set to gain or lose approval as international standards. The ballots are in and being counted, but the world won’t know the verdict of the International Standards Organization until Wednesday.

The voting ended over the weekend, and it’s not clear exactly what is delaying the results. A total of 87 national standards bodies are voting. In at least one case, Steve Pepper, chairman of Norway’s committee on the approval of Open XML is reported to have filed a formal protest with his country’s yes vote, citing “serious irregularities” with the vote.

LiveLeak pulls anti-Koran documentary

Monday, March 31st, 2008

But movie has gone viral

Video-sharing website LiveLeak has removed the anti-Koran documentary Fitna by Dutch MP Geert Wilders after receiving threats. “We stood for what we believe in, the ability to be heard, but in the end the price was too high,” a statement reads. No details were given, except that the threats were “of a very serious nature”.

LiveLeak.com, based in Manchester, says it has strict stance on remaining unbiased and allowing freedom of speech within the boundaries of the law. There was no legal reason to refuse Wilders the right to post his film. “This is a sad day for freedom of the speech on the net,” the site says.

Over three million people visited LiveLeak before the 17-minute film was pulled on Friday. Since then, the movie has gone viral. YouTube is now one of many sites hosting a ripped version of the LiveLeak video.

Freenet 0.7

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Freenet is free software which lets you publish and obtain information on the Internet without fear of censorship. To achieve this freedom, the network is entirely decentralized and publishers and consumers of information are anonymous. Without anonymity there can never be true freedom of speech, and without decentralization the network will be vulnerable to attack.

The network can be used in a number of different ways and isn’t restricted to just sharing files like other peer-to-peer networks. It acts more like an Internet within an Internet.

Yahoo Hopes to Attract Woman with Shine Site

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Yahoo has launched a niche site aimed at women called Yahoo Shine that features a mix of original blog content, articles, and videos with the help of content partners such as Glamour and Good Housekeeping magazine. Yahoo says Shine won’t be anything like your mother’s Web site that may have featured lean meatloaf recipes and celebrity gossip.

Shine says it is not attempting to reach the usual women Web site demographic of a “32.5 year-old with 2.2 kids” most women Web sites pander to. Rather the Ladies of Shine proclaim women today “no longer need to stand by passively as the media portrays us as fashion-obsessed diet victims.”

MJ Registry Watcher 1.2.6.2

Monday, March 31st, 2008

MJ Registry Watcher is a simple system tray program that monitors for changes to any of the startup folders, startup registry keys, and any files you want alerting on.

If a trojan attempts to change your startup settings, you will be alerted, and you can prevent any changes being made. It is fully configurable as to what keys and files are monitored, so, if you have a vested interest in protecting your file association for the mailto protocol (your default emailer), so that your preferred app loads them, and something else is trying very hard to undermine this association (Outlook for example), this will popup, offering to stop a new association attempt, after Outlook had loaded, say. The key that stores this association is hkey_lmus\software\classes\mailto\shell\open\command, and you could protect other associations by changing “mailto” to the desired type, for example, “jpegfile”.

It assumes write access and directory create rights for the path the .exe file sits in (ie. wherever you installed it). The default set of keys and files should ensure that nothing gets run at startup without you knowing about it, and important boot up files don’t get changed behind your back. When monitoring, keys are opened in Read-Only mode, and the application only needs Write Registry access when it has detected a change. It keeps a log of any suspect activity, and displays any such information for the current session in the bottom panel. A log file has this appended to it and can be viewed by pressing the Log button. The file keeps a complete history of alerts.

Adobe Joins Linux Foundation But Forgets About Flash for Linux

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Adobe is joining the Linux Foundation as part of an effort to show its commitment to Linux. Adobe is also now making its AIR platform available for Linux — as an Alpha. Finally there is also an update to the alpha version of Adobe Flex Builder 3 for Linux.

It sure sounds all fine and nice, but there is still is a major problem in my view. Adobe does not lead with Linux, it barely stays even with Linux. Adobe’s product releases for Linux (proof of which are the AIR and Flex alphas) typically follow those for other platforms.

In a quote on a press release issued by the Linux Foundation about Adobe’s decision to join the group, Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation praises Adobe’s move.

Mozilla Developer Reveals What Firefox 4 Holds in Store

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

With the release of Firefox 3 imminent, the rest of the Firefox team is cooking up some crazy ideas for Firefox 4

While Firefox 3 pushes the boundaries of a browser, delivering a cleaner graphical interface, numerous security upgrades, and a variety of new features, it still is far from the “perfect browser”. Of course no browser on the market could earn such a distinction, be it Opera’s “Kestrel” 9.5 browser, which is shaping up to be very nicely, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8, which is sure to deliver top end performance, or Apple’s Safari v3.1 browser, which although plagued with bugs of late is still one of the fastest, most compatible, browsers around.

However, perfection is exactly what Mozilla wants for its Firefox 4 browser and it intends to get it through outside the box thinking. With the release of Firefox 3 imminent, Chris Beard, VP of Labs for Mozilla, has started to talk Firefox 4. Beard is working on many features which, while their underlying components might start to pop up in Firefox 3, won’t truly see the light of day until Firefox 4.
