MacBook Air compromised in 2 minutes for $10,000

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Many of you remember last year’s CanSecWest conference, where a MacBook Pro was compromised for a $10,000 prize. Well… take that, replace the MacBook Pro with a MacBook Air, and repeat it again for 2008.

We learned in February that this year’s CanSecWest would still involve a Mac, but also a laptop running Vista and some flavor of Linux. That’s exactly how it played out this week in Vancouver when security teams were presented with the three machines for the PWN2OWN contest. Unfortunately for Mac fanboys, the MacBook Air was the first to go down, thanks to security researcher Charlie Miller. Miller is now the proud owner of $10,000 in cold, hard cash.

Handwriting Recognition Could Make Its Way to iPhone, iPod touch

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Apple seeks engineers well versed in pattern recognition.

The iPhone’s popularity shows no signs of dying down. When the device was first unveiled in January 2007, it took the world by storm and sparked a buying frenzy when it launched a few months later.

The iPhone was clearly designed with consumers in mind, focusing on phone, music and video operations. Later updates even provided mobile access to Apple’s iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store.

The only people seemingly left out of the iPhone equation were business users. Apple announced its plans to rectify that issue earlier this month with the rollout of the iPhone SDK and a beta of the upcoming 2.0 firmware. The 2.0 firmware brings a wealth of business-oriented features to the iPhone including push email support, Cisco IPsec VPN, WPA2/802.11x and support for Microsoft Exchange/ActiveSync.

CD Recovery Toolbox 1.1.8

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Recover files from damaged or corrupted CD/DVD/HD DVD/Blu-Ray disks

CD Recovery Toolbox tool was developed for recovering damaged files from different disk types: CD, DVD, HD DVD, Blu-Ray, etc. You can use it to restore information lost as a result of some mechanical damage of the disk (scratches, chips, different spots on the surface) or as a result of incorrect recording. Thus, the program can recover data that was considered lost. The CD Recovery Toolbox Free tool scans any CD and DVD disks and finds files and folders located there. We should mention that there can be some information on the disk that cannot be recovered. Not all of the files and folders can be found - that depends on the degree and location of the damage. Therefore, the CD Recovery Toolbox Free tool finds the possible maximum amount of information. After that, it shows a list of all files and folders available for recovery. Now the user can select the files and folders to be recovered. Those specific objects will be recovered while the others will be ignored. The program recovers the maximum amount of information in the damaged file. This reduces the risk of data loss considerably.

The CD Recovery Toolbox Free tool not only has a complete set of data recovery features, but is also user-friendly and convenient. The program interface is designed as a step-by step wizard, where the user has to perform a single action on each page of the wizard. The wizard makes the use of the tool very simple and convenient even for a beginner. CD Recovery Toolbox Free is absolutely free.

Compatible with Windows 98/Me/NT 4.0/2000/XP/2003/Vista.

Triple-core AMD Phenom chips ship

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

AMD announced Thursday that it is shipping triple-core processors, a first for the PC market. AMD also updated the quad-core Phenom lineup and reaffirmed that quad-core Opteron chips for servers will be available later in the second quarter.

The AMD Phenom X3 8400 (2.1GHz) and 8600 (2.3GHZ) triple-core processors are the first processors that use three cores. This is expected to allow AMD to target price-performance points that two- and four-core processors can’t easily match. “The value proposition is simple. Three cores versus two cores. You make the choice,” said Pat Moorehead, VP of Advanced Marketing at AMD. “When you’ve maxed out your two cores…(this is an) extra core to do background tasks,” he said.

Adobe Debuts Web-based Photoshop Express

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Photo storage on the Web is nothing new. Nor is image editing. But when the two are combined under the mantle of Adobe’s Photoshop, well, that unto itself becomes news. Fortunately, Photoshop Express–Adobe’s new free, Web-based service that entered public beta today–offers more substance than just the novelty of its heritage.

Photoshop Express may carry the name of Adobe’s flagship image editing software, but the online version bears little resemblance to that. Rather, the software tries to make basic editing and enhancing tasks point-and-click easy. My early impressions after using this service: The Photoshop Express beta succeeds in making serviceable image editing available wherever you have an Internet connection, but it stil has bugs and annoyances to eliminate in this shakedown cruise.
