Microsoft WorldWide Telescope 2.1.8.1 Beta

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

The WorldWide Telescope (WWT) is a Web 2.0 visualization software environment that enables your computer to function as a virtual telescope—bringing together imagery from the best ground and space-based telescopes in the world for a seamless exploration of the universe.

Choose from a growing number of guided tours of the sky by astronomers and educators from some of the most famous observatories and planetariums in the country. Feel free at any time to pause the tour, explore on your own (with multiple information sources for objects at your fingertips), and rejoin the tour where you left off. Join Harvard Astronomer Alyssa Goodman on a journey showing how dust in the Milky Way Galaxy condenses into stars and planets. Take a tour with University of Chicago Cosmologist Mike Gladders two billion years into the past to see a gravitational lens bending the light from galaxies allowing you to see billions more years into the past.

WorldWide Telescope is created with the Microsoft high performance Visual Experience Engine and allows seamless panning and zooming around the night sky, planets, and image environments. View the sky from multiple wavelenghts: See the x-ray view of the sky and zoom into bright radiation clouds, and then crossfade into the visible light view and discover the cloud remnants of a supernova explosion from a thousand years ago. Switch to the Hydrogen Alpha view to see the distribution and illumination of massive primordial hydrogen cloud structures lit up by the high energy radiation coming from nearby stars in the Milky Way. These are just two of many different ways to reveal the hidden structures in the universe with the WorldWide Telescope. Seamlessly pan and zoom from aerial views of the Moon and selected planets, as well as see their precise positions in the sky from any location on Earth and any time in the past or future with the Microsoft Visual Experience Engine.

System requirements: Windows XP/Vista.

RIAA claims victory over AllofMP3.com, drops lawsuit

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Remember AllofMP3.com, the infamous Russian music download store that was shut down on several occasions only to respawn every time? Well, it appears that after US diplomats last year pressured Russia to shut the site down or face denied entry to the WTO, AllofMP3.com finally went down for good – sort of.

That apparently satisfied the RIAA, which said it has dropped its $1.65 trillion copyright infringement lawsuit against MediaServices, the site’s owner, and declared victory.

Google Earth in the browser is fast, but ugly

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Google today sped ahead in the web search domain once again with the release of the Google Earth API. Yes, the recent improvements to Live Maps were impressive, but today the search giant has put Google Earth into the browser. Microsoft made this move first, completely disregarding Google’s client release of Google Earth, with its Virtual Earth API and browser plug-in. Google’s Windows-only release today seems to focus on 3D, and speed. The performance is noticeably superior to Microsoft’s, but there are still obvious kinks that need to be worked out.

A wake up call for open source developers, Gartner warns

The recent discovery of a potentially serious Secure Socket Layer (SSL) flaw affecting a popular Linux distribution should act as a wake up call to the open source community, experts warn.

John Pescatore, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner, called for open source developers and their vendor counterparts to improve communications processes to address the flaw that could lead to the exposure of encrypted data.

The Sans Institute issued a ‘yellow alert’ on 16 May over the SSL vulnerability in some Debian distros.

Computer Scientists Devise A ‘P4P’ System For Efficient Internet Usage

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

A Yale research team has engineered a system with the potential for making the Internet work more efficiently, in which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) software providers can work cooperatively to deliver data.

The way people use the Internet has changed significantly over the past 10 years, making computers seem to run less efficiently and putting strain on the available bandwidth for transmitting data.

Since 1998, the percentage of Internet traffic devoted to the download and upload of large blocks of information using P2P software has increased from less than 10 percent to greater than 70 percent in many networks. By contrast, Web browsing now accounts for 20 percent and e-mail less than 5 percent of total Internet traffic, down from 60 and 10 percent respectively, in 1998.

Professors Avi Silberschatz, Y. Richard Yang, and Ph.D. candidate Haiyong Xie in Yale’s Department of Computer Science are part of a research team that is proposing an architecture called P4P — which stands for “provider portal for P2P applications” — to allow explicit and seamless communications between ISPs and P2P applications.

Belgian Newspapers Sue Google For Sending Them Traffic - Again

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Actually, Copiepresse is suing Google for publishing and storing their content without permission, but what they obviously don’t understand is that when Google News publishes your headline and a short excerpt linking to the original article, that’s fair use, and it’s a good thing because it sends you tons of traffic.

This is an old story; and if you’ve been following it closely, you know that Google had already lost once. Copiepresse only wanted their content to be removed from Google News and Google.be, however, now they want money - anywhere between 51.7 and 77.5 million dollars will do.
