The online Apple Store is down—it’ll “be back shortly” with new iPod models, no doubt. But early this morning Apple dropped the prices of all its iPod nano, touch, and classic models.

Early this morning, Apple quietly dropped prices for its line of iPods, just hours before it is expected to launch new iPod models later today. Aside from the iPod shuffle, all iPods received a price cut—the biggest being the 32GB iPod touch, which had $120 slashed from its price.

Apple has announced new iPod models every September since the introduction of the original in 2001. However, dropping prices on the “current” models before the new ones are announced is unusual. Typically Apple keeps right on selling the current model up until the new models are announced, which immediately replace the previous ones. The previous models then get relegated to the “clearance” and/or “refurbished” section of Apple’s online store.
