Adobe established a standard called Portable Document Format, shortly PDF. It is meant to create and distribute digital documents. These documents can be displayed on any type of computer independent of the operating system running on it. There are different commercial applications that allow creating PDF-documents but as the name says these are not for free!
WinPDF Writer allows any user of a computer running a Microsoft OS to create PDF-files from any printable document out of any Windows application which is able to print on an installed printer.
WinPDF Writer installs as a virtual Windows printer driver. The only thing you have to do to create a professional looking PDF-document is to print it with the Windows application of your choice and choose WinPDF Writer as the printer in the print-dialogue.

Xpdf is an open source viewer for Portable Document Format (PDF) files. (These are also sometimes also called ‘Acrobat’ files, from the name of Adobe’s PDF software.) The Xpdf project also includes a PDF text extractor, PDF-to-PostScript converter, and various other utilities.
Xpdf runs under the X Window System on UNIX, VMS, and OS/2. The non-X components (pdftops, pdftotext, etc.) also run on Win32 systems and should run on pretty much any system with a decent C++ compiler.
Xpdf is designed to be small and efficient. It can use Type 1, TrueType, or standard X fonts.

PDF Download is a Firefox extension that solves the problems everyone has about handling PDF files with Firefox. PDF Download is not a PDF plugin: you still need to have installed the Adobe or the FoxIt PDF plugin if you want to open a PDF inside Firefox.

Adobe Reader SpeedUp is a simple application that was created to help make the loading time of Adobe’s Acrobat/Reader software bearable for everyday use. AR SpeedUp only needs to be used once (a process taking only a few seconds) and then your ‘Reader will be transformed forever. There are also some tweaking options available.
