Google PowerMeter to track energy usage online

Google may be known for providing a number of online services, but the company wants to also help people become a little “greener” in their everyday lives. One way Google hopes to do that is by pushing the idea of the Google PowerMeter. PowerMeter, currently in prototype, will allow home owners to track electricity consumption through their iGoogle homepage.

The Google PowerMeter would receive information from utility smart meters and energy management devices which it would then use to track how energy is used through different household activities. Using this information home owners can learn what they can do to save money and become more energy efficient. Users will also be able to share energy consumption information with others to gauge how they rate.
