International Standards Group Rejects Microsoft Office Open XML

Many of the countries that voted against the format did so with qualifications, meaning that Microsoft will have a chance to address their concerns before a final vote is taken in March.

Microsoft(MSFT)’s controversial ca(CA)mpaign to convince worldwide standards bodies to endorse its Office Open XML document format as an international standard has hit a roadblock.

A proposal that called for OOXML to receive so-called fast track approval was voted down over the weekend at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Geneva by standards groups from participating countries.
