Google eyeing Wikipedia?
“Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar. You’re gonna go far”.
At about 4pm on Wednesday afternoon, NZ time, Wikimedia founder Jimmy Wales tweeted that Google had given the organisation a cool US$2 million, with the official release to follow on Thursday.
Quite a pretty penny considering Wikimedia’s last annual fundraiser netted just over US$8 million.
It’s a very generous gesture towards a more open web, but it does raise a number of questions and speculations.
As of February 2010, Google has spent billions of dollars acquiring 57 companies, and buying shares in a further three. The largest single buy was the US$3.1 billion purchase of online advertising company Doubleclick.
I can’t help but wonder if Wikimedia will be next.
