Google’s Chrome Overtakes Apple’s Safari for Third as Internet Explorer Market Share Continues to Shrink
(ChattahBox) – Google’s Chrome browser has overtaken Apple’s Safari, for the first time as the number three browser worldwide, behind Internet Explorer and Firefox, according to the latest browser market share figures. Web metric company Net Applications figures for December showed that Google ended 2009 with a 4.63 per cent market share, a 0.7 of a percentage point gain, but just enough to sneak past Safari’s 4.46 per cent share. PC World speculates that the large surge could be due to the Mac and Linux Chrome Beta releases last month.
Microsoft’s Internet Explorer still has a dominant 62.69 per cent market share, but IE’s share has dropped by nearly a full percentage point in each of the last six months, and Net Applications estimates that it might sink to as low as 50 per cent by the middle of 2010. Mozilla’s open source browser Firefox also dropped a tenth of a point to settle in at 24.6 per cent. Opera and Opera Mini account for a shade under 3 per cent of users.
