No more GooHoo: Google pulls out of ad deal with Yahoo

Google has decided to cancel its ad deal with Yahoo. Google made the announcement this morning, saying that lingering concerns about the agreement would only lead to more strife in the form of legal battles and damaged relationships with partners. “That wouldn’t have been in the long-term interests of Google or our users, so we have decided to end the agreement,” the company wrote on its Public Policy Blog.

Google and Yahoo inked a temporary deal in April of this year that would place Google ads on up to three percent of Yahoo’s searches. It had the potential to help Yahoo’s finances significantly, possibly increasing the company’s cash flow by 25 percent in the first year. Even last spring, however, the deal was on the Department of Justice’s radar, which was apparently concerned about possible antitrust violations.
