Web firm promises greenest facility yet

Yahoo has unveiled plans for new datacentres that it claims will be the company’s greenest yet, and has promised to cut its global carbon intensity by at least 40 per cent by 2014.

Dubbed the Yahoo Computing Coop, owing to its similarity to a chicken house, the datacentres use high pointed ceilings and louvered walls to dissipate heat naturally, eliminating the need for an air conditioning system.

“For datacentre geeks, we expect our new design will have an annualised average power usage effectiveness [PUE] of 1.1 or better,” said David Filo, co-founder of Yahoo.
